Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program (2027-2031)

Overview The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is offering the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program (RHMT) (2027-2031) grant opportunity, supporting rural training arrangements for health students across Australia. About The RHMT supports health students to undertake rural training through a network of rural clinical schools, university departments of rural health, dental faculties offering extended rural placements, and end-to-end rural medical training arrangements. The RHMT also supports regional training hubs, which build medical training pathways within a region and guide students and trainees through these. The aim of the RHMT is to improve the recruitment and retention of health professionals in rural and remote Australia. The Government has announced RHMT reforms to strengthen rural workforce outcomes, consolidate funding streams, improve delivery, and reduce administrative burden. Purpose The purpose of this grant opportunity is to encourage, prepare, and support health students (including First Nations students) to pursue health careers in MMM 2-7 areas of Australia through training, recruitment, selection, education, and research activities which are innovative, agile, and in line with available evidence on improved rural health workforce recruitment and retention. Objectives The reformed RHMT will: Shift to an outcomes-focused model for rural retention and workforce shortages Strengthen universities' roles in meeting local and national workforce needs Encourage innovation and agility Remove outdated requirements and focus on longer-term outcomes Support continuous improvement across the RHMT network Reduce red tape and administrative burden Enhance qualitative and quantitative reporting Provide greater funding certainty to universities Tender Briefing Date: 30 July 2026 Time: 2:00pm (AEST) Further details on the briefing session are provided in the grant opportunity documents.
