Overview The City of Greater Bendigo is seeking to appoint a suitably experienced Head Contractor to carry out urgent remediation and restoration works at the Bendigo Conservatory, located within Rosalind Park. About The City of Greater Bendigo is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia, located in the Central-Western part of the state, with an area of 3,048 square kilometres. The Bendigo Conservatory is located within Rosalind Park and is owned and maintained by the City of Greater Bendigo. Samuel Gadd and George Minto, the City Surveyor, are credited with the design of the Conservatory Building. Ironwork was manufactured locally at the foundry of Frank M Brown in Creek Street, Bendigo at a cost of 216 pound, and the building was constructed in 1897 and opened in March 1898. The delicate decorative architectural castings of grey cast iron produced by Frank M Brown for the structure of the Conservatory are some of the finest ever made. The lightweight metal glazed roof is supported by a series of decorative corinthian columns that enclose the cast iron rainwater down pipes. Each component part is held together by bolts and interlocking arrangements of lugs. The Conservatory is architecturally significant in Victoria as the only surviving example of a nineteenth century conservatory within a public park. The building is listed on the National Trust register and with Heritage Victoria. A permit has been provided by Heritage Victoria which carries various conditions. Background Purcell Architects were engaged by the City to provide Lead Consultant services for the investigations and design required to address the issues being experienced by the building. Purcell Architects will provide construction phase advice through to completion. Recent investigations have revealed urgent remediation works that are required to be undertaken at the Conservatory. These works are necessary to address the deterioration of the building fabric and better safeguard the building for future generations. The Conservatory is now in a vulnerable state due to the fragility of the fabric, in particular the timber window framing which forms part of the structural system that supports the entire building. The building is now at extreme risk due to the escalation in deterioration of the fabric and its vulnerability to further damage by vandalism. Purpose The City is seeking to appoint a suitably experienced Head Contractor to carry out the works as per the tender issue drawings, in response to urgent deterioration of the building fabric that has placed the Conservatory at extreme risk. Objectives The objective is to provide safer, compliant, restoration works to the building that ensures it will be available for future generations of visitors to enjoy.
