Job details Geoscience Australia (GA) is seeking to engage one (1) Software Engineer to support the operation and ongoing enhancement of critical satellite ground station systems. GA operates and maintains essential satellite ground station infrastructure, including the Alice Springs Satellite Ground Station, which enables the acquisition and initial processing of Earth observation data for national and international missions. As part of ongoing operational uplift activities and delivery under the Landsat partnership, the successful candidate will provide specialist software engineering capability to develop, maintain and support ground station automation systems and associated operational platforms. This role is suited to a Python Developer / Systems Engineer with demonstrated expertise in supporting operational systems, enhancing existing capability and ensuring the reliability, availability, and continuous improvement of mission-critical systems. Flexible working arrangements may be considered. The successful candidate will be required to attend the GA office at least one (1) day per week, with further onsite attendance as needed for project delivery. The contractor will provide specialist Python development and systems engineering services, including but not limited to: Development, enhancement and support of satellite ground station automation systems using Python (2/3), Flask, J2EE, HTML/CSS/JavaScript and MySQL. Design and maintenance of automation software architectures that integrate with ground station hardware and control systems. Operational support for production systems, including fault diagnosis, remediation and support documentation. Management of changes to operating systems and application code bases, including planning and support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases and patching activities in coordination with managed service providers. Development of system observability, logging, monitoring and statistical reporting to support Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Implementation of secure software development practices, including code validation and software signing where required. Collaboration with internal stakeholders and international partners to support reliable and efficient system operations.
