Department of Education - Champion Bay Senior High School - Artistic Services for Public Art - New Sports Hall

Overview The Department of Housing and Works (WA) is calling for expressions of interest from artists for a Percent for Art project associated with the new Sports Hall at Champion Bay Senior High School. The project also involves associated refurbishment landscape work to integrate the new building into the existing campus. About Champion Bay Senior High School was opened in 2019 on the original site of the John Willcock College in Geraldton, Western Australia. John Willcock was the 15th Premier of Western Australia (1936 to 1945) and represented the seat of Geraldton. The original school was established and named in his honour in 1975. Today, the school serves the Midwest region with a focus on comprehensive education, community connection, and vocational pathways. Scope This project seeks an artwork or a series of artworks located at the entrance to the new Sports Hall. The opportunities for the artwork to be realised are in the following areas: Applied in a digital print to the fibre cement wall panels and the soffit (panels of the verandah entry ceiling) that wrap around the main entrance to the building, as detailed in Appendix A Site Context Plans and Elevations Free standing sculptures that also provide seating or a meeting place, located on the paving or within the immediate adjacent landscape at the entry to the building Suspended from the soffit of the main entrance Sandblasted into the concrete paving at the entrance to the building The artist may select one or more sites, depending on the concept and costing. If the printed or sandblasted artwork option is selected as the preferred site for the final artwork, the project assumes that an original artwork will be created as the basis for the digital print. This artwork can form part of the works and be displayed in the foyer or appropriate area of the school. The artwork may be a painting, print, photograph, drawing, carving or textile, that is able to be photographed for translation into the printed artwork. Elements or motifs from the artist's final design documentation may be applied by the Project Design Team to screens or other features within the new buildings in consultation with and subject to the artist's approval.
