Job details The The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, development and implementation of modern cloud-native data solutions supporting the modernisation of the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) and the Australian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Information System (AGEIS). This role will play a critical part in transitioning the Department's legacy data warehouse environment to a scalable, secure and high-performing Azure data platform. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across data engineering activities, ensuring architecture designs are translated into robust, production-ready data solutions while maintaining the integrity, accuracy and auditability of nationally significant environmental datasets. Working within an established architecture framework, the Senior Data Engineer will collaborate closely with Solution Architects, Application Architects, Technical Leads, scientists, geospatial specialists, policy experts and project managers to deliver strategic data platform outcomes. This role is accountable for driving the transition from a legacy SQL Server / SSIS / SSAS data warehouse to a modern platform based on: Azure Databricks (Spark, PySpark) Delta Lake (ACID, optimised storage) Unity Catalog (governance, lineage, access control) Azure SQL Azure Data Factory (orchestration of end-to-end data pipelines) The role ensures continuity, accuracy and auditability of critical national datasets while enabling enhanced data wrangling, analytics and modelling capabilities. FullCAM and AGEIS are critical national systems contributing to Australia's greenhouse gas reporting obligations within the National Inventory and International Reporting Branch. This role is central to ensuring data integrity, scalability and long-term sustainability of both platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role, suited to a senior data engineer who can bridge data architecture and engineering execution, ensuring that complex data platform designs are translated and implemented into robust, production-ready solutions.
